PMH members Dolores Acevedo-Garcia and Joanna Almeida have co-edited a Special Issue (December 2012) of Social Science & Medicine (the world's most cited social science journal, publishing cutting edge social science research in health) on “Place, Migration and Health”. The papers in this special issue highlight promising new directions in research on immigrant health. They provide a thorough view of how place and migration patterns influence the health of immigrants, as well as that of their families and the communities they emigrate from and immigrate to. The papers examine different theories and methods currently used to understand immigrant health issues, propose new ones for consideration, and raise important questions about how both sending and receiving countries can impact the health of immigrant populations. PMH members Dolores Acevedo-Garcia, Emma V. Sanchez-Vaznaugh, Edna A. Viruell-Fuentes, and Joanna Almeida have published a paper entitled “Integrating social epidemiology into immigrant health research: A cross-national framework” in a new Special Issue of Social Science & Medicine. The authors draw on the immigration and health literature to develop a framework for research on immigrant health that takes into consideration the context of both sending and receiving countries, the ties that immigrants maintain with both countries, and the actual migration process. The authors discuss the theories behind their framework, some of the challenges that it can present in conducting research, and suggest directions for future research. PMH member Edna Viruell-Fuentes, of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, published a new study in a special issue of DuBois Review. In it, she explores the experience of Mexican immigrant women in Detroit, MI as they construct a sense of ethnic belonging even as they confront and resist racial stereotypes. She suggests that the stress involved in these processes is one way living in a racialized society affects health outcomes.
